Where these factors come from

Network speeds count bits, file sizes count bytes: 8 bits = 1 byte. So 100 Mbps is 12.5 MB/s exactly. Decimal prefixes (k = 1000) are used throughout this category.

Common questions

Why does a 100 Mbps plan download at about 12 MB/s?
Because 8 bits make a byte: 100 Mbps ÷ 8 = 12.5 MB/s. Browsers and file managers report bytes, so the number looks smaller than the plan.
Is MB/s the same as Mbps?
No — MB/s is megabytes (capital B) per second, Mbps is megabits (lowercase b) per second. Lowercase b means bits in every networking standard.
How long does a 10 GB download take on 200 Mbps?
10 GB is 80 Gb (×8), divided by 200 Mbps = 400 seconds, just under 7 minutes at full line rate.
